Cephalonia is an island attractive to all with its vineyards, olive groves, mountains, cliffs, limestone rock, the cave of St. Gerasimos, the Cave of Drogarati and the underground lake at Melissani. There are many historic sites and shore excursions that make the day very special.
DUBROVNIK, CROATIA (12 NOON – 2:30 AM)
Perched on the Dalmatian Coast, this Pearl of the Adriatic is a medieval Mediterranean city known for its Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Many tours visit the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and venture up to the ramparts of the city’s iconic walls (with portions dating back to the 13th century) for panoramas of its splendid churches, palaces, monasteries and fountains. Dine and shop along Old Town’s Stradun, or main street, before a tour of the Franciscan Monastery Museum and the Old Pharmacy, which has been operating since 1317. A filming locale for HBO’s hit series “Game of Thrones,” Dubrovnik offers plenty of guided tours for those wanting to see the settings of popular scenes shot in the show’s fictional town of King’s Landing. Other excursions include cable car rides for bird’s-eye views and sea-kayaking adventures to the isle of Lokrum and a hidden beach cave.
KOTOR, MONTENEGRO (8 AM – 5 PM)
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the old town of Kotor blends history with jaw-dropping beauty. Guided walks through its intimate streets bring you to landmarks like St. Tryphon Cathedral, built in 1166, and the Maritime Museum, which chronicles Montenegro’s rich seafaring heritage. The city is surrounded by fortress walls, and a roughly 90-minute round-trip trek to St. Ivan’s Castle at the top affords views of the Bay of Kotor. This dazzling body of water can be explored on kayaking expeditions and boat rides to Our Lady of the Rocks, a man-made island that’s home to a church and museum. An excursion to a family-run farm teaches you about olive oil production as you indulge on prosciutto, cheese and wine. Neighboring areas worth visiting include Jaz Beach; Budva, one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast; and the Lustica Peninsula, where you can discover the luminous setting of the Blue Grotto cave.
BARI, ITALY (8 AM – 5 PM)
Situated in southeastern Italy along the Adriatic Sea, the capital of Puglia is believed to have been inhabited since 1500 B.C. Visit the old town district to see the stately 12th-century Romanesque cathedral and the Basilica of San Nicola, founded in 1087 to house the relics of Bari’s patron saint, St. Nicholas (often referred to as Santa Claus). To explore local cuisine, shore excursions include pasta-making classes or food tours seeking figs, burrata cheese, warm focaccia and, of course, scoops of gelato. Along with a castle dating to the 1130s, this Italian university town offers a seaside promenade, an impressive archeological museum and Via Sparano, a famed shopping street for luxury brands.
CORFU, GREECE (8 AM – 5 PM)
Vineyards and olive groves thrive amid rocky mountain terrain on this western Ionian Sea isle. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its winding labyrinth of streets leads to the expansive Esplanade Square, alluring shops and cafes, and three 15th-century forts from the Venetian rule. For a seaside escape, head to the golden sand of Glyfada Beach or to Paleokastritsa, famed for the turquoise waters of its bay. The resort town also has a hilltop Byzantine monastery dating to the 13th century. Mountainous Lakones boasts panoramic views of Paleokastritsa and the sea while the crowning glory of Gastouri is Achilleion Palace and its gardens. Completed in 1891, the palace once served as a getaway for Empress Elisabeth of Austria and later Germany’s Kaiser Wilhelm II before the start of World War I.
OLYMPIA, GREECE (8 AM – 2 PM)
Located on Greece’s Peloponnese peninsula in the Ionian Sea, Katakolon features shops, art galleries and restaurants serving seafood delicacies. Soak up the sun on Kourouta Beach or take a tour of the surrounding countryside before heading 35 miles east to Olympia to enjoy adventures such as rafting, cycling, kayaking and kite-surfing. The town also is home to the Archeological Site of Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were staged in 776 B.C. Strolls around the complex offer a look at the remains of the original stadium, gymnasium and Temple of Zeus, which once housed one of the Seven Wonders of the World: Phidias’ approximately 40-foot-tall Statue of Zeus. Close to the ruins, the Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity boasts more than 400 exhibits with artifacts that date to the prehistoric period.
